Golf - the historic courses within easy reach

Other than Royal Dornoch Golf Club with its two courses (one of which is currently ranked fifth best in the world by Golf Digest), there are a further five golf courses within a 25 minute drive of Oystercatchers. Ranging from the classic seaside links of Brora to the forest-lined fairways of Bonar Bridge, there is a golfing challenge to suit every level of ability. The area is blessed with some of the loveliest golf courses in the country and all of the clubs are visitor friendly but do book in advance during the summer months.

If you're planning to visit more than one of these clubs it may be worth your while to work out the savings offered by a Dornoch Firth golf pass.

Ranked in the world top ten, a wonderful golf course understandably a place of pilgrimage for the golfing cognescenti. Immaculately kept and restored to a true links condition of running fairways and hard, fast greens. At most times of year booking is essential. The club has a second course, The Struie, which is much cheaper, much quicker, with some fine holes and far from over crowded.

Always a good welcome and a good run of holes through the middle of the course where the flowering heather can lift your spirits as you search for the ball that just strayed off line.

A really satisfying collection of seaside holes where high banks of yellow flowering gorse and whin flanking several holes can give the impression that you are the only players on the course. Book a day as you'll want to go out a second time to get it right (and it'll feel like really good value).

A classic natural golf course largely unchanged in layout for more than eighty years. Usually a good pace, always good value, very welcoming, by the sea, overlooked by heather-clad hills - perfect holiday golf at any time of the year.

A scenic moorland and woodland 9 hole course. Even though only 15 miles inland at the head of the Dornoch Firth, a cloudy day at the beach can be a sunny day at Bonar Bridge.

Tarbat GC (Portmahomack)

A short course without the polish of some of its neighbours. Exposed to any breeze, some of the raised greens demand precise approach shots. For beginnners probably the most encouraging of the local courses.

There is a driving range at Davochfin Farm.
